Not your mis-step to apologise for, but thanks :-)
And I have great respect for those who do choose to be parents. And by that I don’t mean choosing to birth a child, but rather the choice to parent hir. Sometimes giving birth is not a choice, but reflects a lack of choice.

Don’t come to me at work when I have a 60-page RFP to complete in 2 days with minimal assistance, 3 worthless meetings on the horizon, a marketing campaign I’m really excited to work on but can’t get the time, and ask me to do a special marketing piece to target ONE petty customer with the only instructions being: “Oh, I don’t know. Make it pretty. Use your imagination.”
I’m using it right now to bludgeon your skull with my stapler.

I have a really embarrassing clutzy thing. During nursing school, I had an interview. Mind you, I’m normally in scrubs and tennis shoes or my Dansko’s. So, I’m in a dress and heels and as the interview wraps up, I am shaking the woman’s hand and backing up and low and behold, my heels sticks onto a strand of the carpet and I totally fall, right on my ass, in the woman’s office and hit my head on the goddamned door. I have NEVER been so horrified in my whole life :shock:
Oh, and it resulted in a sprained ankle too :no:

Just curious which are the three shows you thought of headed by a woman? I am sure you are right but the only one I can think of of the top of my head is Nina and the Neurons, although I haven’t had my coffee yet!
Also, last week the midmorning slot got two new presenters – one of which was a woman amputee. I was pleased about that, but her partner was still a very white, middle class young man. Better than nothing though.

I’m facing this situation with my 7yo boy, youngest in his 3rd grade class, but one of the biggest. Should he be bringing a stuffed toy to school as a reading buddy? He said that the teacher said they could. But – will he be teased? Will some kids mess with his toy, not treat it like he would and make him upset? My boy can be quite tough and independent, but also very sensitive. He has long hair and handles mistakes about his gender and comments about his hair VERY smoothly (naturally and politely), but what about a his love for a soft toy? I have sent a message to his teacher for her feedback (about class personalities and norms) and have also suggested to my son that he wait and see what the other, older boys bring. Kinda phrased it as “well, you know some kids play rough with their toys and may play rough with yours too – you better know how it will be so you will know what toy you want to risk.” I need to also talk with him about playing with what he wants to, but also being aware that some kids may tease. This really shouldn’t be an issue! I was smacked and felt it hadn’t done me any harm, and considered it up to the parent to make that choice but now you have made me analyse my own behaviour, and really made me think by putting those phrases up. I now think the complete opposite – smacking should indeed be illegal. Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever had someone turn me around so quick! Thanks again.
 

At a La Leche League conference, someone – I think it might even have been the famous Diane Wiessinger herself – was talking about the words mama and papa. She said papa, or dada, with its hard consonants, may have been latin baby speak for “play” or “fun”: pa! pa! pa! da!, like a kind of clapping and excitement. Whereas mama, with its softer sound, she thought was similar baby speak for milk, comfort, nurture, a mixture of a plea and a cry: maaaa! mamamama!, and so on.
Now, I love that La Leche League helps mothers to breastfeed and supports gentle parenting practices. I’m not quite so thrilled that they also seem to reinforce gender role stereotypes and heteronormativity. (Although, in fairness, they do at least put a lot of emphasis on the father supporting the mother and playing his part, which is better than nothing at all. Grateful for small mercies and so on.)

America, I’m worried.
I’ve been reading day in and day out about the Central American refugee children in Texas, and it seems so many of us have forgotten our hearts.

On Friday morning, I was talking to Chris about my upcoming eye surgery. Worrying a little about the actual procedure, imagining the needle coming straight toward my eye, thinking about my inability to look away.
“If the doctors mess the surgery up,” George asked in between Cheerios bites, “will you have to wear an eye patch?”
